Oxford Food Symposium

  • St. Catherine's College Manor Road Oxford England (map)

This year’s topic is Food Rules and Rituals. Reflecting a very human need to impose order on a world we often can’t understand nor control, they provide emotional reassurance, but also need to be broken, again and again.

Remembrance & Ritual: A Culinary Observance – Multi-media artist and culinary historian Carolyn Tillie will guide you through the transformation of a commemorative utensil in a special, hands-on ritual that is an acknowledgement of transitions through creation and performance art. As we collectively and meditatively cut apart vintage cookbooks and gather words as an invocation to those we hold close in our hearts, each participant will be taken on a heartfelt and uplifting hands-on journey where thoughts are transferred into a shared community activity as the words themselves are applied to a piece of vintage cutlery. During the process we will recall memories, imagine possibilities, and reflect on life’s cycles. Everyone involved will take home their creation and participants are welcome to bring their own piece of special cutlery or utensil or choose one from the vast selection that Carolyn will be bringing from her studio.
