That Over Which We Have No Control

8,500.00

Created in 2009, this piece has been exhibited in over a dozen exhibits in three countries. Struggling to fight temptations, we are subjected to many consumer manipulations; none more traditional than confections and jewelry. In the piece, That Over Which We Have No Control, I anticipate the essence of receiving a gift as alluded to the classical “Tiffany Blue” box. As one expects to find jewelry, the 14k gold rings are not set with diamonds or precious stones, but with plastic representations of desserts and sweets which suggest the immodesty of desire and impermanence of lust. Here exists an offering of covetousness, longing, and voracity but the viewer is challenged to grasp the juxtaposition of gold as a luxurious and valued material with the transitory materials of plastic and chocolate.
